Today’s Famous Birthday – 5 March – Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770)
On March 5, 2022 by trappedinthe18thGiovanni Battista Tiepolo was born on the 5th March in 1696 in Venice.
He was one of the most important painter of the 18th-century Venetian school, although he lived and worked also in Würtzburg (Germany) between 1750 an 1753 and in Madrid (Spain) , where he died on the 27th March in 1770.
As one of the most talented decorative painters of the 18th century, Tiepolo is best known for his frescos painted in rococo style. He was inspired by biblical, mythological and also real historical events and persons, although sometimes he adjusted his vision to the modern fashion standards. Just take a look at the historically totally inaccuratly dressed figures on the painting The banquet of Cleopatra. (1743-44)

His self-portrait is part of the fresco in the Würtzbug Residence ( the palace of the Bishop of Würtzburg)
Tiepolo also produced etchings.
